Month of April 2014
The quote of the month is “Know your limits but never stop trying to exceed them” (Anonymous)
Have you ever stopped yourself from doing or accomplishing something amazing just because you were scared of the outcome? Having limits are very important, because without them, we would never know where our physical and mental boundaries are. But limits can also inhabit us! Some limits are necessary, like not lifting an 100 pound boulder or not being involved in 9 different activities, but others are made from fear of the unknown. Never stop trying to push your limits. Try a new food every once and a while, or travel to a new place! The more things you can handle, the more fulfilling your life can be and the more prepared you are for life’s irregularities. As for that fear, don’t let it incapacitate you. While writing this month’s newsletter, my friend said “I can’t do this, but I’m doing it anyway” and I love it because even though something may be difficult and seemingly impossible, she still gives it her all. Think in this way and don’t let anything or anyone (even yourself) take you from conquering your dreams. After all, a short story only becomes a novel when you add more pages to it!
Have a wonderful April, and make each day different than the rest!

Month of March 2014
I will be taking a small break during this month! See you in April!
Month of February 2014
The quote of the month is “Learn to be calm and you will always be happy” (Paramhansa Yogananda)
Sometimes, it is hard to show true happiness. As a society, we get so caught up in our daily stressors that we do not take the time to stop and breathe. We build up our concerns, problems, and anxieties without ever taking a moment to let them go. This is the reason why many of us can’t hold on to pure joy. We disregard the positive points in our lives and focus on the negative. But, once we let go of trivial drawbacks and take a breather, we will find that happiness is much easier to obtain with a clear mindset! Stop letting whatever is going on around you affect your total contentment. Be serene and take one day at a time. Despite the exciting events of the previous day (Valentines’ Day, that is), let your happiness come from within. You will find that it produces the best results. Remember, the weather will always change outside, but it’s the quality indoors that truly matters.

Month of January 2014
The quote of the month is “If you want to make good use of your time, you’ve got to know what’s most important and then give it all you got” (Lee Iacocca)
Setting priorities is a very popular resolution during the new year holiday, especially with returning to school and falling back into the academic routine. We have the opportunity to do everything we need to, but sometimes we tend to put certain things to the side. I encourage you to manage your priorities in a different way; instead of haphazardly doing what comes to your head, write down a list of what’s important to you and accomplish your tasks in that order. I personally know how hard it is to sit down and knock out assignments that are on the top of my to-do list because of time management, but along the way, I learned that organizing time and focusing is the best way to get the goal accomplished. Besides, you can never truly see the top of the canopy without picking the tallest tree and climbing it.
Happy New Year, a spectacular January, and make each day different from the rest!

Month of December 2013
The quote of the month is, “The principle is competing against yourself. It’s about self-improvement, about being better than you were the day before.” (Steve Young)
I choose this quote for this month because I felt like it could fit with many different circumstances. We are nearing the end of the year, and we often stop to reflect how this year has gone and how we can do better next year. However, in the midst of these reflections, it is important to recognize that we have to push ourselves. We have our best interests at heart, and it is best not to rely on others for external motivation. Be your own cheerleader. More importantly, try to do better than you have in the past! Learn from your previous mistakes and push forward into success. Struggled with finals and cumulative tests last year? Ace every one of them this year. Didn’t put your best foot forward last week? This week, be one step ahead of everyone else. Look back, take notes, and run with your new knowledge! This will give you confidence and the wisdom needed to accomplish your goals, by yourself. Remember, you are the only one running in your lane of the race, so run it well!

Month of November 2013
The quote of the month is, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” (Aristotle)
Consciously starting a habit is difficult. We try to make habits to improve our lifestyle, but we often only stop at one action! If we always make an effort to do our best, then we inevitably become the best. Last month, I talked about how you have the power to change yourself for the better. This month, I want to emphasize how it is not just one action that reshapes you; its a repeated set of choices. Try to think about how you are putting yourself out there. What you do and how you present yourself is a direct reflection of who you are, and if you repeatedly show your finest, then the finest is who you become. One act of kindness does not make you a kind person in the same way that one act of selfishness does make you a selfish person. It’s how you treat others (and yourself) on a day to day basis that characterizes who you are. Always put your best foot forward! Remember, a phone is only considered a success after it amazing you on more than one occasion!

Month of October 2013
The quote of the month is “Be as you wish to seem.” (Socrates)
As we enter this season of Halloween, we often stop to think about what to wear as a costume, not really considering who we are underneath it and how we are portrayed in the world. We look in the mirror and sometimes wish that we could be something else, perhaps someone more confident or more remarkable. It isn’t hard to find imperfections, but it also isn’t hard to start embodying who you want to be as a person. Do you see yourself wishing you were more active? Throw yourself into some activities! Want to be more of a leader instead of a follower? Start leading people in the right direction instead of straying to the background. Take a chance and become your own role model. Soon enough, who you are and who you want to be will be the same person. Remember, the only difference between the caterpillar and the butterfly is the cocoon that stands in between them!

Month of September 2013
The quote of the month is: “Mistakes are the portals of discovery.” (James Joyce)
Everyone has heard the clichéd quote “Learn from your mistakes.” But how many of us act upon it? It is easy to mess up every once and a while, but if we don’t learn from these situations, we will end up making the same mistake over and over again. Each moment is a learning opportunity. Made a bad grade on a test? Discover what you did wrong and try your hardest to do better next time. Accidentally deleted a paper without saving it? Try pressing the save button a few times so that you won’t waste time in the future. Embarrassed yourself in front of a large group of people? Try thinking before you speak, so that the next time you contribute to a conversation, everyone will turn their heads in awe. Don’t let your mistakes take over your day and rule your life. They don’t deserve that satisfaction! Get up, learn from them, and do better next time. You have no idea what you can accomplish. Remember, you can’t walk without crawling (and falling) first.

I will be taking a small vacation for the summer months. Hope to see you in September!
Month of May 2013
The quote of the month is: All problems become smaller if you don’t dodge them, but confront them. Touch a thistle timidly, and it pricks up; grasp it boldly and its spines crumble”
(William S. Halsey)
What does this quote mean? Confidence. Confidence has the most power when facing your fears. The only problem is not everyone has it. People step out blindly, hoping their fears to be vanquished in the blink of an eye, and they are horribly disappointed when it comes back to bite them. Facing a problem with confidence makes the problem smaller! Take a step forward, take a deep breath, and realize that fear only harms you and prevents you from moving forward in your life. Once you conquer it, the world is in your hands and possibilities radiate from every surface. Only when grapes are squashed can the wine be created!
Have a wonderful May, an incredible summer, and make each day different from the rest!

April 15, 2013
The quote of the month is “ The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.” (Michael Althsuler)
I particularly love this quote because it references the common adage “Time flies” but offers a positive spin to it. Yes, Time flies, and yes, we have no control over it, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try our best to take advantage of each second. Focusing so much on the future deletes the present, which just makes time seem to go faster than it already is. For example, don’t stress about a test you have in the upcoming week or turning in an assignment late last week. Instead focus on doing your very best each second of the present day, and time won’t fly by as much anymore. Remember clocks only work as well as the battery allows!

Month of March 2013
The quote of the month is: “Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well” (Josh Billings)
This quote isn’t saying to accept what you were born with and live with the circumstances. Rather, it is saying to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. The point of things being “once-in-a-lifetime” is exactly that: they don’t happen very often, and when they do, you should definitely consider capitalizing on them. Take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, and snatch the golden opportunity. Who knows what it could be? A great position or job, a social outing, or even a new puppy might be on your horizon. It’s better to open your arms to something new and exciting, rather than shy away and wait for another to come. Imagine an opportunity as a library book. That book will be passed on to many people without it changing its content. However, the readers have a wonderful chance to be affected by it, simply because they decided to pick it up.

Month of February 2013
The quote of the month is: “A pocket is no place for a smile” (Blues Traveler)
I choose this quote because of the special occasion yesterday (Valentines Day is what I am referencing). Some people start the day with the expectation that it will be a terrible experience when truly it has the potential of being one of the best days of your life. Dish the smile out of your pocket and share it with the world! You never know who could be influenced by your actions. Your smile is beautiful, but unfortunately some people won’t ever be able to see it because of the past clogging your brain. Let it go, be happy and smile. The dentist doesn’t do all of that hard work for nothing!

Month of January 2013
The quote of the month is: “You get credit for what you finish, not what you start” (Unknown)
Consider this quote a means of encouragement. They say the hardest thing about accomplishing a goal is starting, yet most people stop in the middle of the road before reaching the stoplight because they encounter a speed bump! Obstacles in life will not be easy, but the sense of accomplishment at the end makes the struggle worth it. The important thing is to embrace the obstacles because (however cliché this might sound), they make you a stronger person inside. Remember that the pearl isn’t formed without the hard work of the oyster.

Month of December 2012
The quote of the month is: “You must learn to be still in the midst of activity and be vibrantly alive in repose.” (Gandhi)
I felt like this quote correctly fit the time and the season. There is a reason why this month is sometimes called, “Stress-cember”, with finals and tests and not to mention the holiday gift shopping madness (Should I even bring up the anticipation around December 21?) But in the midst of all the turmoil and activity, it is important to take a minute to breathe and relax. Stress is what you make it, so try to stay still and relax no matter what is going on around you. Taking a moment for yourself, doing your favorite things, or resting your head a little are great ways of finding inner peace and they all give you the patience you need and so rightly deserve. Take this into consideration if you are hyperventilating about something terrifying or stressful and I guarantee that you will find your cool in the midst of the sauna.

Month of November 2012
The quote of the month is: “Too many people miss the silver lining because they are expecting gold.” (Maurice Setter)
I picked this quote because I see it all the time, even now. People set their goals and standards so high in order to find something worth living for, and they don’t stop to appreciate the joy and happiness in their life in front of them. When creating goals for yourself, make sure that they are building on the good you already have, not starting from scratch. Try reworking your goals so that they take advantage of your present life instead of replacing it. Rather than searching your entire life for happiness, try looking inside your daily life for something to brighten your day. I guarantee you will find it.

Month of October 2012
The quote of the month is
“You can complain because your roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because your thorns have roses.” (Ziggy)
This quote has more depth than the last one, but it is still meaningful nonetheless. The one thing you have complete control over is your attitude, and that attitude can affect many other people. You are responsible for making yourself happy; don’t depend on other people to keep you positive! If you are complaining, try asking yourself, “Does this problem have a solution? And if it does, than what is it?” Most often, the problems that you face have that solution. You just have to go and search for it. Life is a matter of perspective. Whether you see the glass half empty or half full depends on the quality of your eye care.

Month of September 2012
The quote of the month is:
“Plant seeds of expectation in your mind; cultivate thoughts that anticipate achievement. Believe in yourself as being capable of overcoming all obstacles and weaknesses.” (Norman Vincent Peale)
The meaning is quite self-explanatory, but the thought behind it is simply, don’t doubt your personal abilities. You have the power to jump over your obstacles and overcome your weaknesses, whether you realize it or not. Sometimes, it might feel like it is easier to give up rather than to continue trying, but the only way to overcome something hard is to start! You have to plant the seeds of expectation before they can grow into the flower of success! (Cheesy? I know.) So, whether it be bringing up your grades for conferences or dealing with something in your personal or social life, just look for the power within and you can accomplish anything.
Have a wonderful September, and make each day different from the rest!
